UNCF NAMES DR. TAMMY L. MANN AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE FREDERICK D. PATTERSON RESEARCH INSTITUTE
(FAIRFAX, Va.) - October 6, 2009 - UNCF—the United Negro College Fund—the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization-announced today the appointment of Tammy L. Mann, Ph.D. as Executive Director of the Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute. Dr. Mann will be responsible for leading the nation’s foremost research organization whose mission is to design, conduct, and disseminate applied research that helps to improve the educational opportunities and outcomes of minorities and UNCF’s 39 private historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
Dr. Mann, who has nearly 20 years of experience working in applied settings to translate research to practice for professionals, policy makers and parents, arrives at UNCF from ZERO TO THREE-- a national non-profit organization devoted to promoting the health and development of very young children. As Deputy Executive Director, she was responsible for leading programmatic work across the organization in areas including public policy, professional development, leadership development and parenting resources. Before assuming that role, for seven years she directed the Early Head Start National Resource Center at ZERO TO THREE which provided training and technical assistance support to over 700 Early Head Start and Migrant and Seasonal Head Start programs across the country. She has published a variety of papers and book chapters and is currently engaged in completing an edited volume focused on health and development of African American children, birth through adolescence and specifically seeks to examine how prevention and intervention efforts contribute to better developmental and educational outcomes. She has served on numerous panels and national advisory committees on issues related to young children. Dr. Mann has been an adjunct faculty member at Howard University in the department of Human Development and Psycho-educational Studies and a Public Policy Fellow at the American Psychological Association.
“Tammy Mann brings to UNCF a wealth of research skills and scholarship noted for helping families with young children get the education that is fundamental to building a pipeline of students who are prepared to go to and complete college,” said Michael L. Lomax, Ph.D., UNCF president and CEO. “We are excited to have Dr. Mann on the UNCF team and look forward to her contributions that will inform our work and further establish UNCF as the premier organization for improving the educational status of African Americans of all ages from preschool through adulthood.”
Dr. Mann earned her Bachelor’s degree from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA and both a Masters and Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology at Michigan State University.
“I am delighted and honored to become a part of UNCF and look forward to making contributions that will ensure that more students are prepared to enter and successfully complete postsecondary education and thus meet a crucial and increasing national demand for college graduates from diverse backgrounds,” said Mann.
