“One of six children, with parents who were tobacco farmers, I was fortunate to attend Shaw University, though my parents could not help. I existed on scholarships and the generosity of strangers, even coming close to missing graduation because of my debt. My hard-won education helped me to a career in public education.
“Now, I have the opportunity to pass it on, and so I am working with UNCF to establish the Margie Verbal Scholarship for college students who have the kind of need I once had.”
