Adjunct Professor Najla Norwood Brings the Latest in Phage Bioinformatics to Bennett College through Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s 2026 SEA Faculty Meeting

Bennett College biology students will benefit from the latest advances in phage discovery and genomics thanks to Adjunct Professor of Biology Najla Norwood, who recently completed advanced faculty training through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).

Professor Norwood participated in the 2026 SEA Faculty Meeting in Bethesda, Maryland, from May 29 to June 1. The four-day intensive workshop focused on phage bioinformatics, equipping faculty with the latest tools and techniques used in genomic research.

Among her biggest takeaways was the growing role of artificial intelligence in scientific research and education. “The field of science can use AI in many ways that allows students and professors to increase their access to the latest technology,” Norwood said. She also emphasized the importance of continuous professional development, noting that science and technology are constantly evolving, making ongoing training essential.

During the meeting, Norwood received training on PHENONA, a newly unveiled gene annotation software designed to advance phage genomics research. She then introduced the tool to students enrolled in Bennett’s BI 340 course, ensuring they have access to cutting-edge scientific resources.

Norwood also encourages Bennett students interested in biology, medicine, or scientific research to explore the growing field of phage informatics. “You can make a difference in scientific research and improve the future of healthcare,” she said.
