Leading With Purpose: This Paine College Student is Making an Impact
Martin Martinez maintains one of the highest GPAs at UNCF-member institution Paine College. With support from the Doris & John Carpenter Scholarship, administered through UNCF, he has been able to stay focused on earning his degree and giving back to his campus community. Martinez has dedicated himself to serving others and mentoring fellow students.
“The scholarship has had a beautiful impact on my educational journey,” he said. “It helped alleviate the stress of not having the funds to continue my education and lowered the amount of loans I would have to take.”
That financial support has allowed Martinez to focus on completing his bachelor’s degree in business management information systems while building a strong foundation for a career that combines technology and business. He already earned an associate’s degree in information technology and chose to expand his expertise by adding the business side of the industry.
“I wanted to round off my IT background with business,” he explained. “Having both under my belt is a blessing because it gives me the flexibility to work in information technology, human resources or other business fields.”
Once he graduates in May 2027, Martinez plans to earn a master’s degree with a focus on cybersecurity and business.
After considering multiple institutions, he felt called to join the Paine community. There, he quickly discovered a campus culture that encouraged leadership, service and personal growth. “I had options,” Martinez said. “But after my first semester, I knew Paine was where I was supposed to be.”
Since arriving on campus, Martinez has embraced nearly every opportunity to serve. He helped rebuild the academic business club, served as student government association secretary and is seeking to become the organization’s first vice president. He was inducted into Delta Mu Delta, the international honor society for high-achieving business students. Martinez is also active in the campus’ Bible study and finds time to build computers.
As a first-generation college student, Martinez understands the importance of helping others navigate higher education. He works in the tutoring center, helping classmates prepare for midterms and final exams. He also serves as a UNCF Ambassador, sharing how UNCF can help students achieve their educational goals and raising awareness of scholarship opportunities. He hopes to expand these efforts by creating regular orientation sessions that connect first-year students with valuable campus resources.
Watching the students he has mentored gain confidence is rewarding. “My biggest goal is to show students they have a voice and that education is key,” he shared. “Helping them move forward and be successful is what matters.”
One of the most meaningful moments of his college career came when he learned he had been selected as one of Paine College’s student marshals, which recognizes students who have earned the institution’s highest academic achievements. “I was shocked because I was so busy working and helping others,” he said. “It’s one of the highest honors the school can give you.”
Without the generosity of UNCF donors, Martinez’s accomplishments may not have been possible. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” he said. “Without your help, this journey would have been much more stressful. Receiving this scholarship has truly been a blessing, and I’m excited for what’s next.”
