Bennett College to Auction its Aaron Douglas Painting of Harriet Tubman to Support Women’s Health
Bennett College (a UNCF-member institution) is auctioning its 1931 Aaron Douglas painting of Harriet Tubman at Sotheby’s, the world-renowned marketplace for fine art and luxury objects, and will donate the proceeds to the Greensboro HBCU’s Women Health Initiative.
Harriet Tubman was commissioned for Bennett College, one of only two historically Black women’s colleges in the country. The painting is expected to sell for $2.5-$3.5 million, a record for Douglas, who was a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance. As Bennett marks 100 years, proceeds will support its future, including an initiative that helps close gaps in health care for women.
