How You Can Help Support HBCUs During This Crisis

This unexpected health event has been a tumultuous time for everyone. Almost overnight our world has been turned upside down. Each of our 37 HBCUs and their students, faculty and staff have needed to make drastic adjustments and adapt to a rapidly changing situation. 

While students at colleges and universities across the nation are dealing with this unprecedented health crisis, the devastation has been especially difficult for HBCUs, which serve a disproportionately high percentage of low-income and first-generation college students. Restrictions to stem the spread of the virus not only closed campuses but also forced the cancellation of many UNCF and HBCU fundraising activities, drastically curbing the ability to raise funds at a time when funds are desperately needed for the unforeseen financial strain that has become our reality. Now, more than ever, we need your help.

The precarious situation has created a number of significant challenges. 

Campus closings displaced many students, some of whom were not able to return home and now face housing and food insecurities as well as financial support to provide for basic needs.

While the situation is fluid and circumstances continue to change, we do know that the COVID-19 virus is extremely contagious. That means that schools must take extra precautions to ensure that campus facilities are sanitized, wiping all surfaces with disinfectants that are effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria and are virucidal. That requires special training for staff regarding the appropriate and effective use of these products, purchasing a larger volume of disinfectant supplies and personal protective supplies for staff. In some cases, it also means paying for overtime or hiring additional staff.

Although this particular journey is unlike any we’ve experienced before, we have always been resilient in the face of adversity and, with your help, we will persevere to get through this one.
