After I Received that [UNCF] Scholarship, My Balance Was at Zero
Azalia Crumb, a sophomore at Howard University, has been able to continue majoring in chemical engineering thanks to the Nissan Scholars Program and Walter B. Jones, Jr. Scholars Program, both administered by UNCF.

“Receiving UNCF support has allowed me to focus on my coursework without constantly worrying about how to cover tuition and fees,” said Crumb, a first-generation college student. “It’s also freed up time for me to get involved in engineering organizations and seek internships that will help me grow as a future chemical engineer.”
When Crumb received UNCF scholarships, she was grateful and shocked that she was able to pay off her balance at Howard University. “The Walter B. Jones scholarship helped me with my financial needs,” she shared. “It was such a surprise, and I needed that exact amount for my balance that was due at Howard University. After I received that scholarship, my balance was at zero.” Crumb also received a renewable UNCF Nissan scholarship, which has helped her continue her undergraduate education.
Without the financial burden of pursuing a college education, Crumb can focus on campus activities that enhance her leadership skills. She is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers as well as a Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) scholar.
“UNCF has taught me how to network with professionals, present myself confidently and advocate for my goals,” Crumb said. “These are skills that have made me a stronger leader in student organizations and more prepared for my future career.”
She advises students to apply for UNCF scholarships, explaining that they not only provide financial support but also professional development skills that will help students beyond college.
“UNCF scholarships not only make education more affordable, but they also connect students with a strong network of resources, internships and professional opportunities that help them thrive beyond graduation,” she said.
After graduation, she plans to work in biopharmaceutical research or pursue graduate school to advance her expertise in vaccine and drug development.
UNCF is proud of our students and alumni who have received scholarships that help them continue their education and graduate. These scholarships are invaluable to students, and UNCF is accepting donations to support students like Azalia Crumb in their academic endeavors.
