Bethune-Cookman University [a UNCF-member institution] has been awarded a three-year grant valued at $300,000 from the National Science Foundation for a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site at the College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics. With mathematical modeling as the main precept, a multidisciplinary team of science, mathematics, and computer science faculty will provide nine participating students research-learning experiences in the data analytic aspects of multiple scientific disciplines. including chemistry, computer science, biological and environmental sciences in an eight-week residential program beginning June 4, 2018.

The overall objectives of the REU site are to promote early engagement of undergraduate students in research, to expose students to interdisciplinary modeling and data analytic resources, to foster active learning through hands-on experiences in a collaborative research environment, and to inspire students to pursue advanced STEM education and research careers.

The REU site will pursue these objectives by engaging students in a set of carefully and extensively planned research projects that pose a wide range of scientific, technological and data analytic challenges. In line with these projects, the program offers a variety of activities designed to improve students’ data analytics, modeling, problem-solving, research, and communication skills. The program also fosters long-term mentoring relationships between students and faculty through intensive collaboration and interaction. The program looks for at least 80% of underrepresented minority participants to increase diversity in future STEM workforce.

Project participants will be encouraged to pursue graduate degrees in STEM fields. Participants and involved faculty will stay connected to form research and professional networks that will remain after the Program. The participants will be well prepared for graduate studies in STEM fields.
