Coding a Bright Future at Benedict College
Benedict College, a UNCF-member institution, immediately felt like the right place for Terrance Duncan, Jr. During a campus tour as a high school senior, he was drawn to the welcoming atmosphere and close-knit community.
“The environment is what really got me to apply,” he said. “It felt like everyone was one big family.”
One of his favorite memories at Benedict was his first Homecoming celebration, with events all over campus, food trucks, entertainment and a full week of HBCU culture.
Duncan received two UNCF scholarships—the John W. Thomas MD Endowed Scholarship and the Goldman Sachs HBCU Scholarship. These scholarships have supported his journey at Benedict, easing the financial challenges associated with going to college and helping him stay focused on his education.
UNCF scholarship support also enabled Duncan to purchase classroom supplies, including a laptop—a critical need for a computer science major. These resources help him to stay organized, prepare for exams and succeed in his coursework.
“The scholarships were a major assist,” Duncan said. “I was able to get a laptop for school, which helped me complete assignments much faster and more efficiently. It also lowered some of my tuition. I’m really honored to have these scholarships.”
As a first-generation college student, Duncan understands the importance of expanding educational access. The encouragement of UNCF donors has made a meaningful difference in his college journey. “I want to thank both of my scholarship donors,” he said. “I’m deeply honored and appreciate the donation. I won’t let you all down.”
He expects to graduate in May 2028. After graduating, he plans work as a software developer in the private sector or serve in a technical coding role in the U.S. Army.
