Graduating Debt-Free isn’t a Dream because UNCF Can Make it a Reality

In May, Melissa Allaro graduated debt-free from Oklahoma State University (OSU), thanks in large part to the Slater-Millner Scholars Fund, developed in partnership with UNCF.

“It definitely helped alleviate any financial stress I had,” Allaro said. “I am beyond grateful.”

In partnership with UNCF, Dr. Nancy Slater and Dr. Alan Millner developed the scholarship to provide financial assistance to sophomores who are on a pre-med track with a demonstrated interest in serving underserved communities. The program, administered by UNCF, also offers mentorship and advising services through the Ascension Medical Educators – Aspiring Physicians Program.

Allaro is continuing the legacy of higher education in her family. While she is a first-generation student in the United States, her parents graduated from college in Benin, West Africa.

Allaro majored in biology, with a concentration in pre-medical sciences, at OSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Cherokee Nation, the Nation’s first tribally-affiliated medical school. She wanted to attend an affordable school in her state, and found that in OSU.

While in school, Allaro engaged in several clubs and student associations. She served as the historian of the Black Student Association for a semester, the secretary and president of the Minority Women’s Association, the treasurer and event lead of HOSA (Future Health Professionals) and an ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences.

“I am really grateful to Dr. Slater and Millner, as well as to the doctors of the Aspiring Physician program I was offered to be part of through the scholarship,” she shared. “The Slater-Millner Scholars Fund has been of great help for my college education. I was also able to receive mentoring through their program, which helped me apply to medical school.”

She is continuing her studies at OSU, where she will work towards a doctorate in osteopathic medicine. After her doctorate, Allaro plans to apply for a family medicine residency in 2029.

UNCF is proud of our students and alumni who have received scholarships that help them continue their education and graduate. These scholarships are invaluable to students, and UNCF is accepting donations to support students like Melissa Allaro in their academic endeavors.
