UNCF Mourns the Loss of Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee

It is with profound sadness that UNCF (United Negro College Fund, Inc.) expresses our heartfelt condolences for the passing of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas. We were deeply moved and still inspired by her steadfast commitment and unwavering support of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and the advancement of Black higher education. Congresswoman Jackson Lee’s advocacy for these institutions, as a member of the bipartisan HBCU Caucus, has left a mark on the educational landscape, touching the lives of countless students and empowering them to pursue their dreams.

Throughout her distinguished career, Congresswoman Jackson Lee proved to be a champion of UNCF’s mission and of ensuring educational barriers were banished. Her strong commitment to reform policing and youth incarceration led to important legislation that improved our criminal justice system and increased fairness for African Americans and other minorities. A guiding light of her congressional career and tenure on the House Judiciary Committee was to make sure no population was victimized by inhumane treatment in our federal and state prison systems and that young people are more likely to be given a second chance.

The impact of Congresswoman Jackson Lee’s advocacy extends far beyond the capitol complex. Her steadfast commitment to HBCUs has strengthened the foundation of our treasured institutions, allowing them to continue their vital mission of providing quality education, fostering academic excellence, and preparing future leaders. By recognizing the significance of HBCUs and the transformative power of education, she has helped pave the way for generations of students to excel and make meaningful contributions to society.

As we mourn the loss of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, we also celebrate her remarkable legacy. Her dedication, passion and unwavering support will forever be remembered as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all those who strive for educational excellence. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time, as we collectively honor and remember the impact she made on the HBCU community and Black higher education at large.
