UNCF Resources Help You Grow, Says Recent Bethune-Cookman University Graduate
Demar Williams graduated from UNCF-member institution Bethune-Cookman University earlier this month. The biochemistry major will be attending the University of Florida in the fall to pursue a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD).
Williams is a recipient of the Target Scholars Program, in partnership with UNCF, which provides need-based scholarships to students enrolled at select historically Black colleges or universities (HBCUs). The program also offers mentoring, internships and networking opportunities.

“UNCF played a major role in my educational journey by helping to take financial pressure off me,” Williams explained. “The Target Scholarship helped cover important expenses like tuition, housing and books, which allowed me to focus more on my academics instead of worrying about finances. Beyond that, it also gave me opportunities to network and build a community with other scholars who are driven and share similar goals.”
Williams is continuing his family’s legacy of higher education. When he was six months old, Williams’ mother immigrated to the United States. She earned her bachelor’s degree while he was in high school.
Williams found himself drawn to Bethune-Cookman University because of its sense of community, family and culture. “At Bethune-Cookman, I felt comfortable, supported and able to truly be part of that experience, which made it feel like the right place for me,” he said.
His most memorable experience at Bethune-Cookman was in 2024, when he participated in a poster presentation at the Florida State Capitol. “I got to share how special our school is,” he said.
Williams also enjoyed attending basketball and football games on campus. “Feeling the culture at the school was memorable to me, too,” he added.

His advice for prospective students? “Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way,” he said. “Programs like UNCF can truly change your experience, not just financially but also by connecting you with people and resources that help you grow.”
Williams also has a message for donors. “Thank you—your support makes a real difference and helps students like me stay focused on our goals and future careers,” he shared.
UNCF is proud of our students and alumni who have received scholarships that help them continue their education and graduate. These scholarships are invaluable to students, and UNCF is accepting donations to support students like Demar Williams in their academic endeavors.
