UNCF Scholarships Power Lane College Student’s Nonprofit Dream
Darnesha Foster of Jackson, Tennessee, was awarded the Procter & Gamble Scholarship HBCYOU Program, administered by UNCF. Foster is a first-generation college student studying criminal justice at UNCF-member institution Lane College.
“Receiving the UNCF Procter & Gamble HBCYOU Scholarship has been a transformative force in my educational journey,” Foster said. “It didn’t just lighten the financial load; it empowered me to pursue my purpose with clarity and confidence.” Foster, a rising senior, said the scholarship enabled her to focus on her studies and pursue leadership opportunities and internships that enhance her knowledge in the legal field.
Without the financial burden of paying for college tuition, Foster was able to devote time to activities that support her interests. She serves as the vice president of Nu Sigma Philo Affiliates of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. “Because of UNCF’s support, I was able to pursue rigorous academic goals, participate in service initiatives and invest time into building advocacy campaigns that uplift justice-involved communities,” she said.
Foster is passionate about raising awareness about autism and started a nonprofit organization called Philo Golden Minds for Autism. Her non-profit supports individuals who have autism and their families by raising awareness through informational booths, providing resources and products and fostering community inclusion, according to the non-profit brochure. “The Procter & Gamble HBCYOU Scholarship reduced the pressure of tuition and fees, allowing me to redirect personal funds toward launching Philo Golden Minds for Autism, covering EIN (employee identification number) applications, branding materials, campaign prep and more,” said Foster. “Their [UNCF] support didn’t just change my semester—it changed my trajectory.”
She was drawn to Lane College’s rich legacy and culture of community. “Lane offered more than just academics; it offered a space where Black excellence, history and resilience are honored and celebrated every day,” said Foster. Her most memorable experiences at Lane include connecting with professors and students through collaboration and experiencing growth opportunities.
“This journey has not been easy,” said Foster, a first-generation college student. “Like many first-generation students, I faced financial hurdles, academic challenges and moments of doubt. But one constant source of support has been UNCF.” She encourages HBCU students to apply for UNCF scholarships and explained “they do more than just provide financial support, they open doors to opportunity, empowerment and legacy-building.”
After graduation, Foster plans to become a defense attorney advocating for marginalized people who are denied fair representation. She’s passionate about educating the public on complex legal concepts and restorative justice.
UNCF is proud of our students and alumni who have received scholarships that help them continue their education and graduate. These scholarships are invaluable to students, and UNCF is accepting donations to support students like Darnesha Foster in their academic endeavors.
