Future Physician Receives Mentorship and Scholarship from UNCF

Michelle Kenton, a proud first-generation college student at Fisk University, one of UNCF’s-member institutions, recently received the Slater-Millner Scholars Fund from UNCF. The scholarship helped to alleviate the financial burden of a college education.

“The Slater-Millner Scholars Fund has allowed me the space to become more involved on my institution’s campus by relieving the financial burden that I would’ve faced without it,” she shared. “With it being a scholarship program, I have the opportunity to be mentored and learn from established physicians.”

Michelle Kenton wears a black shirt, red cardigan, and crosses her arms in front of her.In partnership with UNCF, Dr. Nancy Slater and Dr. Alan Millner developed the scholarship to provide financial assistance to sophomores who are on a pre-med track with a demonstrated interest in serving underserved communities. The program, administered by UNCF, also offers mentorship and advising services through the Ascension Medical Educators – Aspiring Physicians Program. The Aspiring Physicians Program offers recipients monthly webinars focused on topics like professional identity, Medical College Admission Test prep and one-on-one academic advising.

Kenton, a biology major and Spanish minor, plans to work towards an MD after graduating from Fisk. She hopes to become an obstetrician/gynecologist.

“I really wanted to experience an HBCU for my undergraduate education,” Kenton said. “I had only ever gone to small schools and Fisk is a small school. Campus is also 4.5 hours away from home, so if anything too serious occurred, my family could just drive to see about me.”

Her most memorable experience at university is the Mr. and Ms. Fisk Coronation in fall of 2023. “I loved seeing how elegant the queens and kings looked and enjoyed hearing about how they only want what is best for the Fisk Community and their personal stories,” she shared.

Kenton is grateful for UNCF and its donors. “Thank you to Dr. Slater, Dr. Millner and the AME [Ascension Medical Educators] team for this opportunity for growth as a future physician!” she said.

UNCF is proud of our students and alumni who have received scholarships that help them continue their education and graduate. These scholarships are invaluable to students, and UNCF is accepting donations to support students like Michelle Kenton in their academic endeavors.
