Wilberforce University Looks into Reviving its Dormant Football Program

Wilberforce University, one of UNCF’s-member institutions and the nation’s oldest private HBCU, plans to conduct a feasibility study on restarting its long-dormant football program, which has been defunct since the 1940s, according to a university press release. The study will assess the university’s infrastructure needs, funding sources, staffing, student interest and possible partnerships with local organizations and alumni.

Increased enrollment has prompted the university to look into ways to improve student life and expand athletic offerings.

“As Wilberforce prepares to surpass 1,000 students in enrollment by 2026, it’s time to revisit the legacy and potential of our football program,” said Dr. Vann R. Newkirk, president of Wilberforce University, in the press release. “Rising enrollment is prompting this study, and we believe football could be a powerful catalyst for student engagement, school pride and institutional visibility.”

The university’s football team, the Green Wave, could return by Fall 2027, if the study is promising, Wilberforce said. The team was once a powerhouse, going undefeated with an 8-0 record in 1931 and being crowned the Black College National Champion.

Wilberforce noted that football programs have transformative impacts on HBCUs, including increased enrollment growth, alumni engagement, donations, visibility and media exposure as well as bolstering the student experience.

“This isn’t just about football,” Dr. Newkirk said. “It’s about reclaiming a legacy, energizing our campus and showing the world that Wilberforce is ready to lead again—on and off the field.”
