First-Generation College Student Graduates from Spelman College, Her Dream School

Spelman College, a UNCF-member institution, was Emani Labon’s dream school since she was only nine years old.

“I was drawn to its legacy of empowering Black women and its commitment to academic excellence and leadership,” she shared. “Being in a space where I am supported, challenged and surrounded by women who inspire me has been life changing.”

Labon, a first-generation college student, will be graduating from her dream school this month. “I am proud of how far I have come,” she said.

Labon received the Karsh KIPP HBCU Success Scholarship from UNCF, which she said played a major role in her educational journey. “This scholarship made it possible for me to attend Spelman College and significantly reduced my financial burden,” she explained. “Because of that support, I can graduate with less student loan debt, which gives me more freedom to pursue my goals after college. It not only helped me financially but also gave me peace of mind and allowed me to focus fully on my education and the opportunities around me.”

Labon is majoring in political science, with plans to attend law school after graduation. “I am passionate about justice, advocacy and protecting my community,” she said. “I hope to pursue a career in public defense. After graduating, my next step is continuing my education in law school, where I will build the skills needed to fight for those who are often overlooked.”

One of her most memorable times at Spelman was getting to experience Homecoming. “There is something powerful about seeing alumnae return, celebrating together and feeling the deep sense of sisterhood and pride that defines Spelman,” she explained. “It reminds me that being a Spelman woman is a lifelong connection.”

To prospective students, her advice is: “Do not be afraid to dream big, even if you are unsure of the path,” she said. “Opportunities like scholarships can truly change your life.”

And her message to donors: “Your support does more than provide financial assistance—it creates access, relieves stress and opens doors for students like me to pursue our purpose,” she said. “I am deeply grateful, and I carry that impact with me as I move forward.”

UNCF is proud of our students and alumni who have received scholarships that help them continue their education and graduate. These scholarships are invaluable to students, and UNCF is accepting donations to support students like Emani Labon in their academic endeavors.
