What does the Target Scholars Program scholarship cover?

The Target Scholars Program scholarship pays towards all eligible items in a student’s cost of attendance, including:

  • Tuition and fees
  • Room and meals
  • Books and supplies
  • Travel
  • Other eligible costs

What is the application process and selection timeline?

Applications must be submitted online through the UNCF website by July 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET. As part of the application, students are required to upload a current transcript and complete an essay (up to 300 words) responding to the following prompt: “How have you contributed to your community, and what impact did that experience have on your career choice?”

Applicants will be notified by September 30, 2025 if they have been selected as a Target Scholar.

What are the components of a stand-out essay?

Consider the following when developing your essay response:

  • Answer the question with a strong central focus.
  • Exhibit personal passion.
  • Establish a definite point.
  • Use appropriate vocabulary; sentences are complete, clear, and varied.

What are the Program expectations and requirements?

Scholars are expected to:

  • Maintain Regular Communication: Connect consistently with their assigned College Success Coach through meetings, emails, or other communication methods.
  • Engage in Development Opportunities: Actively participate in scheduled professional and leadership development workshops and events.
  • Participate in Programming: Dedicate an average of 1–2 hours per month to Target Scholars programming, including virtual workshops, campus visits, and related activities.
  • Remain in Good Standing: Continuously meet all eligibility criteria as outlined by the program.

Is the scholarship renewable? 

The scholarship is renewable for the 2026-2027 academic year.  To be eligible, Scholars must meet the following requirements:

  • Maintain full-time enrollment as a degree-seeking student in the following areas of study: Business and Engineering.
  • Continue to be enrolled in good academic and personal standing at an accredited HBCU.
  • Maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (“FAFSA”) form.
  • Have a demonstrated unmet financial need as verified by their college or university.
