Fisk University
Founded in 1866, shortly after the end of the Civil War, Fisk University is a historically Black university and is the oldest institution of higher learning in Nashville, TN. Fisk’s outstanding faculty and students continue to enhance the university’s national reputation for academic excellence, which is validated year after year by leading third-party reviewers, as well as, by the pool of talented applicants and the large percentage of alumni who complete graduate or professional degrees and become leaders and scholars in their fields.

Fisk University Honors Justice A. A. Birch, Jr. with Statue Unveiling and Dedication Ceremony
Fisk University hosted a statue unveiling and dedication ceremony honoring the life and legacy of Justice Adolpho A. Birch, Jr. on Sunday, July 26, 2026, in Jubilee Hall’s Appleton Room.
The invitation-only ceremony was held in partnership with the Judicial Council of the National Bar Association as part of the National Bar Association’s 101st Annual Convention, taking place in Nashville from July 25–31, 2026. The event celebrated Justice Birch’s contributions as a jurist, educator, civil rights advocate, and trailblazer whose legacy continues to inspire generations of lawyers, judges, students, and community leaders. >>Read More
A Crown Rooted in Service: Fisk Graduate Student Toniah Anderson Named Miss Clarksville Juneteenth
On Saturday, June 13, Fisk graduate student, Toniah Anderson, was named Miss Clarksville Juneteenth in the event’s second annual pageant. As her family and friends cheered loudly and the crown was placed on her head, Toniah understood the responsibility that came with it.
For Toniah, the crown that she now carries is weighty – and worth it.

- Forbes’ 650 Top Colleges for 2015-2016 ranked Fisk #322 overall, #234 among private colleges and #66 in the South. Fisk is the fifth highest ranked institution in Tennessee, ahead of Belmont University and seven other Tennessee institutions.
- Fisk University has received a top 10 ranking among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s), according to the 2019 U.S. News and World Report. The school rises to No. 6 out of 80 ranked institutions, jumping three spots from its 2018 position.
