Michael Jackson Received an Honorary Doctorate from UNCF-member institution Fisk University
Like everyone else, we’re loving the renewed excitement around Michael Jackson. The release of Michael, the #1 film in the world, is the perfect time to look back at a powerful moment in his legacy.

Michael Jackson received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from UNCF-member institution Fisk University on March 10, 1988. The HBCU honored the global icon in New York City during a UNCF gala dinner, awarding him with an honorary degree in recognition of his philanthropic contributions to UNCF.
In 1986, Michael Jackson donated $1.5 million to UNCF to create the Michael Jackson UNCF Endowed Scholarship Fund. The scholarship benefits underprivileged students attending HBCUs and majoring in communications, performing arts and related fields. Two years later, Michael Jackson also donated the entire $600,000 proceeds from his sold out Madison Square Garden concert to the scholarship.

Forty years later, the scholarship continues to support students with ever-increasing higher education costs. To date, UNCF has supported 492 students from 41 HBCUs through the Michael Jackson UNCF Endowed Scholarship.
UNCF is honored to play a small role in Michael Jackson’s vast legacy.
