What’s the Return on Your Investment?

“A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a wonderful thing to invest in.”® The memorable UNCF phrase means that every contribution to UNCF, whether that contribution is money, in-kind goods and services or volunteer work, is an investment in better futures for deserving students and, through their success, for all of us.

Every good investment has a return on investment (ROI). So if every contribution is an investment, like the $2 million that the people of New Orleans and Louisiana invested last year through UNCF, what ROI can they expect?

After graduating from UNCF-member HBCU Dillard University in 2014, Lawrence Young completed the urban design program at Harvard University before receiving his master’s degree in urban, social and community planning from the University of Southern California. Today, he coordinates the implementation of neighborhood capital projects for the city of Clearwater, FL.

Kaylan Rodgers graduated from UNCF-member institution Xavier University in 2016. Today she teaches school in New Orleans, helping the next generation of teachers, doctors, scientists and other professionals get the education that they need and that we as a community and as a nation need them to have.

Shavondria Jackson
At the UNCF New Orleans’ 2016 Mayor’s Masked Ball, Shavondria Jackson, a student at UNCF-member HBCU Xavier University, was a guest of honor, telling the audience how she faced homelessness before attending Xavier. With the help of a UNCF scholarship, Jackson earned her degree and graduated as a Fulbright scholar. Today she teaches in Spain, proving that an investment in UNCF and better futures makes New Orleans—and the world—a better place.
