Student Story: Matthew Kassi
Matthew Kassi’s drive, determination and commitment to social justice not only earned him the UNCF Social Justice Scholarship but also fueled his success as a student at Howard University. There, the New Jersey native continuously worked toward his academic and professional goals. Kassi’s college experience reflects how UNCF scholarships play key roles in shaping both academic pursuits and professional growth.
The UNCF Social Justice Scholarship provided Kassi with more than just financial relief—it was a crucial turning point in his college journey.
“This scholarship not only provided the financial support I needed at a very difficult time, but it also gave me a sense of validation and encouragement to move deeper into my purpose,” he said.
The circumstances leading to his receiving the scholarship tell the story of its significance.
Kassi entered Howard University at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, which he describes as “arduous.” Kassi started his studies through virtual learning. However, during his junior year, in-person classes resumed, and he took full advantage of the opportunities available on campus.
“By spring of my junior year, I had completed two internships—one with PSEG in New Jersey and another with The Boys and Girls Clubs of America in their Washington, DC office,” he shared. “I also held an executive board position and spent countless hours in service to youth across New Jersey and Philadelphia.”
With so much on his plate, Kassi faced mounting stress. As he puts it: “I was at a crossroads, struggling to juggle my academic responsibilities, working toward my passions and most importantly, the daunting cost of being a college student in our nation’s capital.”
This moment of uncertainty set the stage for a remarkable change. At a time when everything seemed uncertain, UNCF offered a path forward.
“The day I received the UNCF Social Justice Scholarship was a pivotal moment in my life,” Kassi said. “I still remember not being able to contain my excitement, smiling from ear to ear after opening the email.”
The scholarship not only provided relief, but it also opened new possibilities for Kassi’s personal and professional growth. With less financial pressure, Kassi was able to pursue his ambitions with renewed focus.
“The weight off my shoulders allowed me to secure a third internship in New York City, while also giving me the vigor I needed to support my passion project, Pages4Progress,” he explained. “Pages4Progress is an initiative that I started two years ago along with other students with the aim to fight recidivism in local jails and prisons by creating literacy programs and increasing rehabilitation efforts.”
Kassi is a great example of UNCF’s impact. His success illustrates the broader triumphs of UNCF’s work.
In New Jersey alone, UNCF awarded more than 200 scholarships between 2023 and 2024, totaling over $1 million. This support provides essential educational opportunities. It also contributes to long-term community growth and success.
For Kassi, the support he received from UNCF was transformative. He sums up its effect perfectly: “Your support is making a difference in the lives of so many, and we are all profoundly grateful.”
