The Gray Foundation Hosts Reception Welcoming Second Cohort of UNCF/Gray NYC Scholars

More than a celebration, the reception aimed to build community across cohorts and schools, seeding a lifelong network of support

The Gray Foundation and UNCF have teamed up to provide a powerful scholarship to talented New York City students, enabling them to achieve success at the historically Black college or university (HBCU) of their choice without the burden of debt. In the second year of this partnership, the Foundation recently hosted a reception to bring together the entire community of Gray NYC Scholars, some of whom recently graduated from college. More than 70 scholars, alumni and guests gathered July 9 at Blackstone in New York to welcome 10 new UNCF/Gray NYC Scholarship recipients. These 2024 high school graduates join the inaugural cohort of 11 scholars from last year, bringing the total number of UNCF/Gray NYC Scholarships to 21. The program awards need-based scholarships of up to $50,000 annually for a maximum of $200,000 over four years.

In addition to the financial benefits of the program, UNCF/Gray NYC Scholars are assigned a dedicated college success coach to guide and support them as they navigate their college experience.

During his remarks, UNCF Northeast Vice President Diego Aviles emphasized the support system to which the Scholars will have access throughout their academic pursuits. “This reception marks the beginning of a much larger journey. You’ll not only be students at your respective HBCUs, but also members of a strong, lifelong support network. The family you see here today—your fellow scholars, the UNCF and Gray Foundation staff and the dedicated alumni network—all of us are united in supporting your success.”

The reception also included a “Meet the Scholars” panel featuring four current Gray NYC Scholars and alumni. They offered incoming Scholars practical advice on how to maximize the experience, including trying new things, connecting with people from different backgrounds, asking for help and finding ways to give back to the community.  Additional remarks were provided by Gray Foundation leaders Dana Zucker, chief executive officer; Charissa Fernandez, president; and Jon and Mindy Gray, co-founders.

The partnership between UNCF and the Gray Foundation is a shining example of how a robust support system can transform the lives of talented young scholars. By alleviating the financial burdens of higher education and providing mentorship, coaching and community, the UNCF/Gray NYC Scholars Program is empowering students to thrive academically and personally. As the second cohort of scholars embarks on their college journeys, they have the full the commitment of their supporters and stand poised to make a lasting impact on their communities and beyond. This initiative not only opens doors to educational opportunities but also builds a legacy of success, resilience and achievement that will inspire future generations.
