This Spelman Sophomore Founded a Nonprofit to Support Kids in Her Community
“UNCF has supported me in a way that goes beyond academics,” said Kylei Pugh, a sophomore at Spelman College (a UNCF-member institution).
Pugh received the Macy’s Mission Every One Scholarship, administered by UNCF, which has helped ease the cost of college for her family. This financial freedom has given Pugh time to focus more fully on her education and the experiences shaping her future at Spelman. With less financial stress, Pugh has been able to be more present in her college experience and concentrate on preparing for a career in public health.

She expects to graduate in May 2029. After graduating, she hopes to attend Emory University to continue developing her skills in public health.
Her long-term goal is to become a Black epidemiologist and advocate for better health outcomes in underserved communities. Through research and public health, Pugh hopes to address health disparities and improve the well-being of communities that have historically faced barriers to quality health care.
Pugh was drawn to the historically Black college (HBCU) because of its strong sense of sisterhood and the opportunity to learn alongside other ambitious Black women pursuing their own goals. She values Spelman’s alumni network and the history that surrounds the institution.
“Being in that kind of environment felt like the right place for me to grow,” she said.
She has become very involved on campus. Pugh was selected to serve as a Spelman College Ambassador. In this role, she guides prospective students as they explore the college and consider whether the institution is the right fit for them. This opportunity allows Pugh to contribute to the community that has invested in her.
Pugh also participated in multiple successful student government association campaigns. Supporting fellow students during campaign season gave Pugh another opportunity to build relationships and contribute to the Spelman community.
Outside of academics and extracurricular activities, Pugh also founded Katalyst Kids, a nonprofit, inspired by her younger brother Kolton, that supports children in Black and underserved communities who face speech, developmental and educational challenges. The nonprofit is already having a real impact in her community.
“Our goal is to connect children and families with educational resources, support and opportunities that help children thrive,” she shared. “This summer, we were able to turn that mission into action through several community events across Chicago. We provided educational materials and enrichment resources to children, packed and distributed backpacks and school supplies, partnered with local organizations and supported back-to-school events serving families across the South Side.”
Pugh encourages prospective college students to remain focused on the reasons they began their educational journey. “Always remember why you came to college,” she said. “There will be ups and downs, but staying focused on your goals will carry you through.”
She credits UNCF and donors like Macy’s for helping to make her educational journey possible. “Their investment truly makes a difference in students’ lives,” she said.
With the support of her family, the Spelman community, UNCF and scholarship donors, Pugh is building the knowledge and experiences she hopes will one day allow her to advocate for healthier, more equitable communities.
