UNCF Scholarship Motivates Student to Continue Studies at Livingstone College

Denzel Ashiyi, a current college student from Fort Worth, TX, was recently awarded a scholarship through UNCF’s Quillin-Hastings Fund. Ashiyi is a student-athlete majoring in business administration at Livingstone College, one of UNCF’s member institutions.
At the beginning of last school year, he was very anxious and stressed trying to manage classes, track and field practice and finding ways to fund his education. He wasn’t certain that he would be able to finish the school year and questioned whether he would have to drop out. “This scholarship greatly relieved me from any stress that I had for the rest of my fall semester, and I studied more diligently,” said Ashiyi.
UNCF scholarships not only eased his financial stress, but inspired him to set bigger goals and motivated him to continue his education. “It really made me realize that there are people out there that do want to see you succeed, and UNCF was a very big example,” he said.
Granted peace of mind knowing that a portion of his college tuition would be paid through the scholarship, Ashiyi was able to compete in the track and field championship at Livingstone. He plans to try out for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association track and field team this semester.
Ashiyi encourages students to apply for UNCF scholarships to alleviate financial stress. “It is highly important that HBCU students apply for all and any types of UNCF scholarships to alleviate some stress and worry less about paying off tuition,” he said. He explains the application process is smooth and straightforward. Once he filled out a profile, he was able to see what scholarships he qualified for.
After graduation, Ashiyi plans to launch an apparel business that highlights the African diaspora and connects to his Cameroon roots.
UNCF is proud of our students and alumni who have received scholarshipsthat help them continue their education and graduate. These scholarships are invaluable to students, and UNCF is accepting donations to support students like Denzel Ashiyi in their academic endeavors.
