UNCF Charlotte’s Annual Luncheon Raises Funds for Education, Honors Women Leaders
First-time attendee Melody Gross recognized with meaningful prize
This September, UNCF Charlotte hosted its 22nd annual Maya Angelou Women Who Lead Luncheon, celebrating women leaders and raising funds for higher education. This year’s event featured over 40 vendors, testimonials from students whose lives have been transformed by UNCF (United Negro College Fund) and inspiring speakers, including two-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter.
Among the attendees was Melody Gross, founder of Courageous Shift, which empowers safer workplaces with training programs, crisis consulting, policies and other support. This was Gross’ first time attending the luncheon, and it was certainly memorable since she left inspired and with an exciting prize.
The event featured engaging activities, such as a highly anticipated raffle. More than just a chance to win prizes, the raffle serves as a fun and meaningful way to give back. Every raffle ticket purchased contributes to scholarships and educational programs that support students pursuing higher education. Gross was thrilled to win a Nutcracker-themed raffle prize, a beautifully curated basket that included collectible ornaments, autographed programs, collector’s items, four tickets to see The Nutcracker performed by the Charlotte Ballet and a backstage tour of the show.
The prize held special meaning for Gross, who danced in her youth and grew up watching the show. “I definitely screamed because I was so excited—that was the one I wanted to win!” she said.
Gross used the ornaments to create her own unique
Nutcracker-inspired centerpiece, adding a personal touch to the holiday season. She’s already enjoyed the backstage tour, which brought back feelings of nostalgia, and looks forward to seeing The Nutcracker for the first time in years. The experience not only resonated personally but also deepened her commitment to supporting UNCF’s mission.
By attending the event and supporting UNCF, Gross contributes to an organization with a proven track record of success and a lasting impact on students’ lives. Gross shared that she was a first-generation college student with limited funds for education, so she has a personal connection to UNCF’s work. She reflected: “The opportunities I took advantage of when I was in high school helped guide me, especially because, as a first-generation college student, you don’t have the blueprint for it.”
Gross encouraged those considering attending future UNCF events to participate. “You don’t lose anything by attending, but you can lose a lot by not attending,” she said. “You can lose the opportunity to learn more about UNCF, and you lose the chance to see the impact of the work they are doing.”
The Maya Angelou Women Who Lead Luncheon continues to be a space for celebration, inspiration and impactful giving. Gross’s story is a testament to the impact of uplifting women leaders and supporting higher education.
