From Chicago’s South Side to Morehouse: UNCF Scholarships Shaping the Future of Health Care

Jeremy Hall, a student at Morehouse College, one of UNCF’s member institutions, is passionate about improving health care access and providing financial stewardship. Hall has been able to continue double majoring in biology and finance at Morehouse thanks to the CVS Health Foundation Health Care Careers Scholarship Program and the Goldman Sachs Market Madness: HBCU Possibilities Program—both administered by UNCF. He is also the author of “The HBCU Hustle: Making Moves In College”.
He credits UNCF’s support and investment in his growth as inspiration to aim higher. “Coming from the South Side of Chicago, UNCF gave me the one ‘yes’ I was looking for, and it changed my life forever,” he said.
“Receiving support from UNCF has been life changing,” Hall shared. “These scholarships lifted an enormous financial burden off my family and me, making it possible for me to focus on learning, leading and serving without constant worry.”
During his freshmen year, Hall received $5,000 in scholarships and still struggled to meet his basic needs, including purchasing a campus meal plan. With his tenacious spirit and determination, Hall mowed lawns to make ends meet and took out additional loans to cover the difference. “My persistence paid off in the spring, when I was awarded the UNCF Michael L. Lomax scholarship,” said Hall, referring to a scholarship established in honor of UNCF’s chief executive officer. “This provided not only financial relief but it renewed my confidence and determination to continue pursuing my goals at Morehouse.”
He reflects on these times as experiences that have made him stronger and influenced him to write his book. His book, which debuted in August 2025, provides students with a guidebook to navigate HBCUs and teaches them how to maximize opportunities in college to create their legacy. The book offers tips on how to fund college through UNCF scholarships and other sources, how to engage in campus life and how to navigate life after college.
Without the financial burden of pursuing a college education, Hall can focus on campus activities that enhance his leadership skills. He’s held numerous leadership roles on campus, such as secretary of finance and scholarships on the student government association, economic development chair at the Morehouse Collegiate 100, president of the University Innovation Fellowship Morehouse cohort and a UNCF Student Ambassador.
“UNCF has been more than just a source of financial aid,” Hall said. “It has been a network of mentors, advocates and lifelong friends. Through the [student] ambassador program, I’ve had the chance to lead, serve and inspire others to pursue higher education and give back to their communities.”
Hall has now received numerous renewable UNCF scholarships and he became a participant of the Goldman Sachs Market Madness: HBCU Possibilities Program. This is a four-month intensive training program that provides students with hands-on experience in finance with a case study competition.
UNCF programming has also helped Hall to develop his communications, organizational and strategic thinking skills. He explained that UNCF programming helped him “step up, lead boldly and champion others.” The skillsets Hall has gained helped him develop projects, mentor his peers and drive change on campus.
Hall explained he was drawn to Morehouse because the college is “rooted legacy, leadership and service.” While being a caregiver for his grandfather, he discovered his passion for healthcare and financial literacy. His grandfather’s strength while going through numerous health challenges motivated him to persevere through adversity. “Morehouse’s commitment to developing men of character and purpose resonated with my desire to honor my grandfather’s legacy and serve my community,” said Hall.
In addition to providing students with college resources through his book, Hall is also a chief executive officer and founder of start-up businesses Luminary Pathways, an AI tool that helps students make life decisions, and the Motion Academy, a Discord community that shares life advice and tips for success. After graduation, he plans to work at Goldman Sachs as an investment banking asset and wealth management division analyst.
UNCF is proud of our students and alumni who have received scholarships that help them continue their education and graduate. These scholarships are invaluable to students, and UNCF is accepting donations to support students like Jeremy Hall in their academic endeavors.
