Granddaughter Continues Family’s Huston-Tillotson University Legacy
Armani Fowler is a junior communications major and psychology minor at Huston-Tillotson University (HT), a UNCF-member institution which has been ranked the top private historically Black college and university (HBCU) in Texas for 2026 by the U.S. News & World Report.
During her time at HT, Fowler received five UNCF scholarships: the John Lennon Endowed Scholarship, the Quillin-Hasting Fund (as a renewable scholarship), Macy’s Mission Every One Scholar and the UNCF General Scholarship.
Fowler also serves as a UNCF Ambassador, sharing scholarship, internship and other UNCF opportunities with her fellow students. “Being a UNCF Ambassador has given me the opportunity to connect with other ambassadors on campus and build lasting bonds,” she said. “It has also allowed me to advocate for students by sharing how scholarships have helped me reduce my financial burdens and stay focused on my education.”
“Being a UNCF Ambassador means helping students like me achieve through education,” she continued. “It is about giving back to the community and supporting others who are on the same journey. I believe in the power of education and want to inspire others to pursue their goals.”
Fowler’s grandmother also attended Huston-Tillotson University; she was unable to graduate due to familial responsibilities. “She continues to be my biggest inspiration,” Fowler shared. “I’m here not only for myself but also for her. My family’s strength and encouragement keep me going every day.”
“As a first-generation college student, I’m proud of how far I’ve come,” Fowler said. “I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities UNCF has provided me and my university. Without UNCF’s support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It has made it possible for me to pursue my degree and move closer to graduating almost debt-free.”
Her most memorable experience at Huston-Tillotson University was her first homecoming. “It was amazing to see students, staff and faculty come together as one big family,” she said. “The unity and love on campus that week showed me the true meaning of ‘framily.’”
After graduation, Fowler plans to pursue a master’s degree in social work and “dedicate my career to making a positive change in the lives of youth,” she said.
UNCF is proud of our students and alumni who have received scholarships that help them continue their education and graduate. These scholarships are invaluable to students, and UNCF is accepting donations to support students like Armani Fowler in their academic endeavors.
