From Application to Graduation: UNCF Supports Students Every Step of the Way

The journey to and through higher education is an exhilarating chapter that also comes with its fair share of hurdles. From figuring out how to pay for tuition to finding the right career path, students need a reliable partner. For decades, UNCF has answered the call, providing a bridge from the first campus tour to the final walk across the graduation stage, and beyond.

See how UNCF supports students at every phase of their college experience.

More Than Money: UNCF Provides a Holistic Approach to Student Success

An info table for K-12 AdvocacySince its founding in 1944, UNCF has helped more than 550,000 students earn their college degrees. The organization’s reach continues to expand, with about 8,000 graduates joining the alumni network every year. But the secret to UNCF’s success isn’t just the dollars awarded—it’s the wraparound support that helps students persist through challenges and thrive in their academic pursuits.

The numbers tell a compelling story. UNCF scholarship recipients achieve a 70% six-year graduation rate, significantly outpacing the 40% rate of similar students without UNCF support. When extrapolated across the entire population, experts estimate this level of success could add 16,500 additional college graduates annually.

Starting Strong: Scholarships and Application Support

For many students, cost is the biggest barrier to college. UNCF serves as a financial launchpad. UNCF manages hundreds of scholarship programs, each designed to meet specific student needs and career aspirations. As the nation’s largest private scholarship provider for minority students, UNCF awards more than 14,000 scholarships annually to students attending over 1,100 schools nationwide. That support reduces financial stress and helps students focus on earning their degrees.

UNCF also partners with universities to embed career-readiness courses into curricula, equipping students with practical skills for internships, co-ops and long-term career success. Our EMERGE College and Career Readiness Initiative connects high school students with scholarships and mentorship early on. Many students report being unfamiliar with UNCF or unsure how to apply for scholarships, underscoring the need for proactive outreach. These initiatives simplify the college application process and make financial support more accessible.

Emergency Aid: Removing Unexpected Barriers

That safety net can mean the difference between a student completing their degree or dropping out due to circumstances beyond their control. Whether it’s an unexpected medical bill, family emergency or housing crisis, emergency aid helps students navigate challenges without sacrificing their education.

Financial Education: Building Generational Wealth

UNCF’s Fidelity Scholars Program, for instance, pairs students with dedicated success coaches and mentors throughout their college careers. Students receive coaching support to strengthen their skills in time management, studying, networking and interview preparation. Since launching in 2023, the program has awarded more than 750 scholarships totaling over $12 million to more than 1,200 students. Two out of three Fidelity Scholars are first-generation college students.

That forward-thinking approach recognizes that college isn’t just about earning a degree—it’s about establishing a foundation for financial security.

Career Pathways: From Classroom to Career

Through our partnership with Macy’s, selected students participated in a personalized styling experience during the 14th Annual UNCF Student Leadership Conference from May 29-June 1, 2024. Guided by professional stylists, students curated polished, workplace-ready looks—building confidence and sharpening their professional presence as they prepared for their summer internships.

Connecting education to employment opportunities is crucial for student success. UNCF manages specialized programs that create career pathways in high-demand industries.

For example, the UNCF Lighted Pathways Program addresses the talent shortage in asset management by providing scholarships and internships to undergraduate students. The program educates and empowers young people by supporting their personal and professional development while providing the industry with the talent it needs.

Beyond Lighted Pathways, UNCF manages a variety of career-focused initiatives, including:

  • Fund II Foundation UNCF STEM Scholars Program: Supports students attending HBCUs who are pursuing STEM degrees. The program provides scholarships, mentorship, internships and career development opportunities to help scholars succeed in college and transition into STEM careers.
  • UNCF/Koch Scholars Program: Supports students at HBCUs through scholarships, leadership development and access to professional networks. It emphasizes academic excellence, critical thinking and career readiness to help scholars succeed in their chosen fields.
  • K-12 Education Fellowship: Prepares emerging educators to lead in classrooms and school systems through hands-on teaching experience, mentorship and professional development. Fellows build practical skills in instruction, leadership and equity-focused practices while gaining exposure to diverse educational settings.
  • Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Scholarship Program: Provides students with financial support, leadership development and academic resources to help them succeed in college. The program celebrates Frederick Douglass’ legacy by investing in scholars who demonstrate strong potential, resilience and a commitment to making a positive impact.

Each program has its own eligibility criteria, application requirements and deadlines. They all share the common goal of preparing students for successful careers.

Mental Health and Wellness: Supporting the Whole Student

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, UNCF partnered with national mental health organizations such as The Steve Fund and Healthy Minds Network to address mental health challenges at HBCUs. UNCF partnered with these organizations to host conferences, webinars and awareness campaigns that engaged thousands of students, faculty and administrators in critical conversations.

UNCF’s Fidelity Scholars Program also integrates mental health resources, reinforcing the connection between emotional well-being and academic achievement.

UNCF’s Network of HBCUs Builds Community and Excellence

UNCF’s network includes 36 member HBCUs, creating a community of institutions committed to student success. These schools occupy four of the top 10 spots in U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 ranking of HBCUs, underscoring their academic excellence.

A 2024 study, Transforming Futures: The Economic Engine of HBCUs, documented the broader impact of these institutions: more than 136,000 jobs created nationally, $16.5 billion in overall annual economic impact and $146 billion in added lifetime earnings for HBCU graduates.

In multiple studies from UNCF and Gallup, HBCU graduates report receiving more support and experiencing higher levels of engagement than their peers at non-HBCUs. The learning environment matters, and these institutions have cultivated affirming spaces where students can thrive.

A Lifelong Partnership

From the first scholarship application to the job offer, UNCF walks alongside students every step of the way. By providing financial aid, academic support, career preparation and emergency relief, UNCF helps turn the dream of a college degree into a tangible reality.
