From Application to Graduation: UNCF Supports Students Every Step of the Way

The journey to and through higher education is an exhilarating chapter, but it also comes with its fair share of hurdles. From figuring out how to pay for tuition to finding the right career path, students need a reliable partner. For decades, UNCF has answered the call, providing a bridge from the first campus tour to the final walk across the graduation stage, and beyond.

See how UNCF supports students at every phase of their college experience.

More Than Money: UNCF Provides A Holistic Approach to Student Success

Since its founding in 1944, UNCF has helped more than 550,000 students earn their college degrees. The organization’s reach continues to expand, with about 8,000 graduates joining the alumni network every year. But the secret to UNCF’s success isn’t just the dollars awarded—it’s the wraparound support that helps students persist through challenges and thrive in their academic pursuits.

The numbers tell a compelling story. UNCF scholarship recipients achieve a 70% six-year graduation rate, significantly outpacing the 40% rate of similar students without UNCF support. When extrapolated across the entire population, experts estimate this level of success could add 16,500 additional college graduates annually.

Starting Strong: Scholarships and Application Support

For many students, cost is the biggest barrier to college. UNCF serves as a financial launchpad. As the nation’s largest private scholarship provider for minority students, UNCF awards more than $100 million in scholarships annually to students attending over 1,100 schools nationwide. That support reduces financial stress and helps students focus on earning their degrees.

UNCF’s impact begins long before tuition is due. Programs such as UNCF’s EMERGE College and Career Readiness Initiative connect high school students with scholarships and mentorship early on. Many students report being unfamiliar with UNCF or unsure how to apply for scholarships, underscoring the need for proactive outreach. These initiatives simplify the process and make financial support more accessible.

Financial Support That Makes College Accessible

UNCF annually awards more than 14,000 scholarships to students attending institutions across the country. We manage hundreds of scholarship programs, each designed to meet specific student needs and career aspirations.

Financial Education: Building Generational Wealth

Understanding personal finance is critical for long-term success. Many UNCF programs incorporate financial education components that teach students about budgeting, credit management, investing and wealth building.

The Fidelity Scholars Program equips students to become the next generation of professionals, empowering them to increase their lifetime earnings and build generational wealth—which will enable the next generations to graduate from college and become the leaders of the future.

That forward-thinking approach recognizes that college isn’t just about earning a degree—it’s about establishing a foundation for financial security.

UNCF is Your Coach and Mentor

Scholarships are important, but steady guidance drives success. Students need support to navigate academics, career decisions and personal growth.

UNCF’s Fidelity Scholars program pairs students with dedicated success coaches and mentors throughout their college careers. Since launching in 2023, the program has awarded more than 750 scholarships totaling over $12 million. The fall 2024 cohort added 650 scholars, bringing participation to more than 1,200 students. Two out of three Fidelity Scholars are first-generation college students.

Through the Fidelity Scholars program, students receive coaching support to strengthen their skills in time management, studying, networking and interview preparation. UNCF also partners with universities to embed career-readiness courses into curricula, equipping students with practical skills for internships, co-ops and long-term career success.

Career Pathways: From Classroom to Career

Connecting education to employment opportunities is crucial for student success. UNCF manages specialized programs that create career pathways in high-demand industries.

For example, the UNCF Lighted Pathways Program addresses the talent shortage in asset management by providing scholarships and internships to undergraduate students interested in the investment management industry. The program educates and empowers young people by supporting their personal and professional development while providing the industry with the talent it needs.

Beyond Lighted Pathways, UNCF manages a variety of career-focused initiatives, including:

  • The Fund II Foundation UNCF STEM Scholars Program supports high-achieving students attending HBCUs who are pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and math. The program provides scholarships, mentorship, internships and career development opportunities to help scholars succeed in college and transition into competitive STEM careers.
  • UNCF/Koch Scholars Program supports high-achieving students at HBCUs through scholarships, leadership development and access to professional networks. It emphasizes academic excellence, critical thinking and career readiness to help scholars succeed in their chosen fields.
  • K-12 Education Fellowship prepares emerging educators to lead in classrooms and school systems through hands-on teaching experience, mentorship and professional development. Fellows build practical skills in instruction, leadership and equity-focused practices while gaining exposure to diverse educational settings.
  • The Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Scholarship Program provides high-achieving students with financial support, leadership development and academic resources to help them succeed in college. Named in honor of Frederick Douglass, the program celebrates his legacy by investing in scholars who demonstrate strong potential, resilience and a commitment to making a positive impact.

Each program has its own eligibility criteria, application requirements and deadlines, but all share the common goal of preparing students for successful careers.

Mental Health and Wellness: Supporting the Whole Student

College brings academic challenges, but students also face emotional and psychological pressures. UNCF recognizes that mental wellness is fundamental to academic success.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, UNCF partnered with national mental health organizations, such as the Steve Fund and Active Minds, to address mental health challenges at HBCUs. Together, they hosted conferences, webinars and awareness campaigns that engaged thousands of students, faculty and administrators in critical conversations.

The Fidelity Scholars Program also integrates mental health resources, reinforcing the connection between emotional well-being and academic achievement.

Emergency Aid: Removing Unexpected Barriers

Life happens. Unexpected expenses can derail even the most dedicated students. UNCF’s Emergency Student Aid program enables students at member colleges to meet financial emergencies so they can stay in college, graduate and begin their careers.

That safety net can mean the difference between a student completing their degree or dropping out due to circumstances beyond their control. Whether it’s an unexpected medical bill, family emergency or housing crisis, emergency aid helps students navigate challenges without sacrificing their education.

UNCF’s Network of 37 HBCUs Builds Community and Excellence

UNCF’s network includes 37 member HBCUs, creating a community of institutions committed to student success. These schools occupy four of the top 10 spots in US News & World Report’s 2025 ranking of HBCUs, underscoring their academic excellence.

A 2024 study, Transforming Futures: The Economic Engine of HBCUs”, documented the broader impact of these institutions: more than 136,000 jobs created nationally, $16.5 billion in overall annual economic impact and $146 billion in added lifetime earnings for HBCU graduates.

In multiple studies from UNCF and Gallup, HBCU graduates report receiving more support and experience higher levels of engagement than their peers at non-HBCUs. The learning environment matters, and these institutions have cultivated affirming spaces where students can thrive.

A Lifelong Partnership

From the first scholarship application to the job offer, UNCF walks alongside students. By providing financial aid, academic support, career preparation and emergency relief, UNCF helps turn the dream of a college degree into a tangible reality.
