Update: BeyGOOD Scholarships Matched, Expanded to Eight HBCUs

Beyoncé's Homecoming Scholars Award Program, now matched by Google, has expanded to all qualifying students at eight HBCUs, including UNCF members Bethune-Cookman, Tuskegee, Xavier, Fisk, Morehouse and Wilberforce, regardless of gender.

Following the initial announcement of the Homecoming Scholars Award Program, Beyoncé through her BeyGOOD initiative, has partnered with Google to announce more scholarships for the 2018-2019 academic year. Google.org will match her original $100,000 grant with scholarships to benefit four historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) including, Texas Southern University located in Beyoncé’s hometown of Houston, Fisk University in Nashville, which is her father’s alma mater, Morehouse College in Atlanta, and Grambling State University in Grambling, LA.

A total of eight schools will now receive Homecoming Scholars awards for the 2018-2019 academic year, including the previously announced universities: Xavier University of Louisiana, Wilberforce, Tuskegee and Bethune-Cookman.

One winner from each school will receive $25K for the 2018-2019 academic year for study in various fields. This is the second year for a scholars program created by Beyoncé.

Entertainer and philanthropist Beyoncé Knowles will award deserving students a $25,000 scholarship for the 2018-19 academic year as part of the BeyGOOD Initiative Homecoming Scholars Award Program.

Beyoncé, indisputably one of the most influential entertainers of her generation, on April 14, made history at the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival by becoming the first black woman to headline in the festival’s 19-year run. Her electrifying performance has since been dubbed “Beychella.”

Following the HBCU homecoming-themed Coachella performance, which “paid homage to excellence in education, was a celebration of the homecoming weekend experience and the highest display of college pride,” according to a BeyGOOD press release, the newly-established scholarship was announced.

“We salute the rich legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” states Ivy McGregor, director of philanthropy and corporate relations at Parkwood Entertainment, which houses BeyGOOD. “We honor all institutions of higher learning for maintaining culture and creating environments for optimal learning which expands dreams and the seas of possibilities for students.”

The Homecoming Scholars Award Program for 2018-19 will expand to all qualifying students at the four universities [UNCF-member institutions]—Bethune-Cookman, Tuskegee, Xavier and Wilberforce—regardless of gender. The disciplines will include literature, creative arts, African American studies, science, education, business, communications, social sciences, computer science and engineering. All applicants must maintain a 3.5 GPA or above.

Grimes. “This gift reminds us of the importance of HBCU’s and the support for our students from the entire community. We want to properly thank Beyoncé for selecting our University for this prestigious honor and financial support and hope Beyoncé’s leadership encourages other high-profile persons to invest in our young people who are attending HBCUs,” Grimes said.
