UNCF SPDP: How to Apply to an SPDP Program

STEP 1: Check Eligibility Criteria

Each SPDP internship and scholarship program has different eligibility requirements. For example, some of our programs require you to attend a university in a specific state, others may require a specific GPA or major. Be sure to read through the eligibility criteria of a program BEFORE applying to confirm you qualify.

STEP 2: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (“FAFSA”)

STEP 3: Submit Student Application

Each application for our program requires any combination of the following items: essays, demographic information, education information, leadership experience, service experience, and employment information. (Quick Tip: Develop a “Career Mission Statement” that highlights your career goals, campus and community involvement, leadership experience and course work that relate to the internship you are applying to. While each program is different you can tailor your mission statement accordingly.)

STEP 4: Submit Transcript

Depending on the program you are applying for, you may be required to submit your current college or high school transcript.

STEP 6: Request Recommendation Letters*

Letters of recommendation can either be submitted through the application portal or sent via email to the program coordinator. Please include your first and last name in the subject line for all email communication. Here are some tips to remember when requesting a recommendation letter:

  1. Give Notice: Place your request to your recommenders as early as possible. This will give them plenty of time to compose your letter. Also, it will allow you extra time to ask someone else if your first choice is unavailable.
  2. Provide Information: Provide your recommender(s) information that you want to be mentioned in your letter. Providing a resume and list of relevant courses, and/or accomplishments is helpful. Also, don’t forget to provide them with a description of what you’re applying for and instructions on how to submit their letter!
