On Nov. 16, UNCF New York hosted its highly anticipated annual Returning to Our Roots Gospel Brunch, a celebration of faith and commitment to education, raising nearly $70,000 to support higher education for students, marking another milestone in empowering future leaders and scholars.

Honoring Trailblazers and Changemakers

This year’s honorees exemplify leadership and excellence across various fields:

  • Depelsha McGruder, chief operating officer of the Ford Foundation and a Howard University alumna, was awarded the Trailblazer Award for Business Leadership. Her groundbreaking work in media, creating programming for underrepresented audiences, and her dedication to social change — particularly in addressing policies and perceptions affecting Black boys and men — have inspired many.
  • Dr. Emma Jordan-Simpson, president of Auburn Theological Seminary and a Fisk University alumna, a UNCF-member institution, received the Trailblazer Award for Community Leadership. Her extensive contributions to justice-driven initiatives and advocacy highlight her unwavering commitment to community empowerment.
  • The historic Abyssinian Baptist Church, a beacon of hope and faith for over two centuries, was honored with the Keeper of the Flame Award. The church’s newly appointed senior pastor, Dr. Kevin R. Johnson, a Morehouse College alum, a UNCF-member institution, accepted the award on behalf of the congregation.
